Hammond High School hosted its second Teen Summit For School Improvement
on June 23rd. Approximately 64 students, including 12 rising 9th graders,
attended and participated in the event. The day-long summit focused on
entertaining
positive input from the students on several topics that will ultimately
impact the entire study body, faculty and staff.
The day began with students signing in and receiving name badges, t-shirts,
and breakfast, which was provided by Harris Teeter Grocery Store. School
board
member Larry Cohen kicked the Summit off with a rousing welcoming speech
to
the students. After watching a four minute video on The Nature
of Leadership,
the 64 students were broken into 5-6 person teams, each facilitated by
an adult
faculty member or returning student from last years Principal's Advisory
Council Executive Board. The groups, under leadership of Mr. Burke, discussed
and
arranged data focusing on a review of last years Expected Student Behaviors.
Later that morning, the groups each discussed and provided individual
input on topics such as Appropriate Dancing, On Time Arrival to School,
how to improve the Percentage of Students Eligible for Extracurricular
Activities, and Persistent Classroom Disruptions by Students.
After a break, the students re-convened to discuss specific challenges
that face Hammond High School. The students then enjoyed lunch provided
by Subway, Dominoes Pizza, and Rita's Italian Ices. The afternoon segment
featured the topic Hammond High School Students Are You Prepared
for the 21st Century. Mr. Burke spoke with the students about the
need for them to make sure that they are prepared, especially in the technological
field, for the challenges they will face as adults. The students then
discussed as groups the Maryland Technology Literacy Standards for
Students and what assistance they need from the school to help
them achieve those standards. The day ended with a lively discussion from
the students about what will help Hammond High School move from a great
to a phenomenal school. The event ultimately turned out to be a huge success,
thanks largely to the energetic and positive spirit from the 64 students,
all of whom
worked very hard, were extremely focused on the topics under discussion,
and provided insight into what will work toward Hammond High School's
benefit.
Hammond High School would like to thank Mrs. Sally Frekot, Mrs. Tammye
Blossom, and Mrs. Laura Borowski, parent volunteers who took the day to
spend working with the students at the Summit. Mr. Burke would also
like to thank Mr. Barry Sims and Dr. Frazier, members of the local Council
of Elders, for attending
and working alongside our students. In addition, Mr. Burke would like
to thank
Ms. Shari Knudson, Ms. Barbara Davis, and Ms. Robin Smallwood for coordinating
and serving breakfast and lunch to our students. And finally, Hammond
High
School would like to thank the faculty members who worked as coordinators
and facilitators for the event.
Hammond High School would like to especially thank the management team
of Harris Teeter's Grocery Store for providing continental breakfast
for not only our students, but the adult faculty, staff and parent volunteers
who helped make the Summit a success. In addition, the school would like
to thank the management
team of Rita's Italian Ices for coming to our Summit and serving our students
and
staff free Italian ices. Not to be overlooked are the contributions of
McDonalds, Subway, and Dominoes Pizza, all of whom provided free or greatly
reduced priced foods and drinks for the Summit, and Howard County General
Hospital for
providing gift bags for our students. Pictures from the Summit will soon
be online
at www.hammondhs.org.
