| With
the opening of Hammond High School in 1977, Mr. Walter Caldwell, former
principal of Wilde Lake High School, became principal of Hammond High School.
Mr. Caldwell brought several employees with him from Wilde Lake, among them,
our jewel, Mrs. West. Those staff members later became known as "The Hammond High Originals." With her retirement, only four of the original staff will remain; Mr. Joseph Russo, Mrs. Ann Hogg, Mr. Kenneth Zachmann and Mrs. Eileen Stone. In reflecting on 30 years at Hammond High School, Mrs. West said that it was "wonderful to see all the positive changes that have happened to this school since 1977. We used to be referred to with a negative moniker" she continued, "because of all the diversity that this school experienced in its first years. Now its just so nice to see all the good changes for our school". In reflecting on Mrs. West, Mr. Burke, current principal of Hammond High School said: "Mrs. West is a wonderful lady. Although I've known her for some time, I've gotten to really know her this year. Ms. West shared with me something that her principal Mr. Caldwell used to say. 'Give a kid the time of day and it will make a difference in a child's life.' I only hope that I can live up to those words that Mrs. West shared with me ."One colleague expressed the sentiment that is shared by all: "What a beautiful person. A sweetheart. Someone that will always say something to lift your spirits. She always has a good word. She is very refreshing, a very calming individual that always smiles."Mrs. West looks forward to spending more time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Mrs. West will also have more time to spend on her favorite hobby, reading. We hope this "Hammond High Original" enjoys her retirement. We look forward to her stopping by and visiting us here at Hammond. |

| Howard County School Library Media Program | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The mission of the Howard County School Library Media Program is to provide opportunities for students and staff to become effective users of ideas and information. Learning and teaching, information access, and program administration are the essential elements of school library programs. These elements suggest the roles that the library media specialist plays in supporting student learning. The functions and services necessary to the learning and teaching and the information access roles will promote that learning directly; program administration activities offer underlying organization support to the program. The goal areas and objectives for library media specialists are derived from Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning (American Library Association, 1998). Library media specialists and administrators are referred to this document for additional information and lists of resources.
