Hammond High Achievements 2007 - 08
     
  Congratulations to Nicole Battisti, who was the recipient of the Howard County Poetry and Literature Society All County Writing Competition. She also received the Promise and Achievement Award in Language Arts.
 
  Congratulations to Ms. Leeann Beall-Read who was
voted as the 2008 Howard County Senior Teacher of the Year for Hammond High School
by the Senior class. Mrs. Beall-Read is in her eleventh year at Hammond High School, where she teaches English and serves as the
current Senior Class sponsor for the Class of 2008. Ms. Beall-Read graduated from Westminister High School,
after which she attended Towson University. There, she received her Bachelor's degree in English and her Master's
 
degree in reading. Leeann is the "Voice of Hammond High School" as her daily routine can be heard each morning when she does the morning announcements and the "Word of the Day". Ms. Read also announces the names of the graduates at the commencement exercises each year. Best known for her contagious smile and dynamic energy, Mrs. Beall-Read is a worthy recipient of the 2008 Howard County Senior Teacher of the Year for Hammond High School.
 
 

The Special Education Community Advisory Committee held its annual awards ceremony at Oakland Mills HS on April 29. The program honored teachers from each Howard County Public School for their positive contribution and extroadinary work with our special education students.

Receiving awards for Hammond High School were:
Sheryl Baker, Candace Colonna, Eric Cullings, Bob Kordon, Yvonne Lanier, Joan McCabe, Amy Nestor, and Cynthia Petrlik. Congratulations to our Special Education honorees!
 
  Congratulations to Hammond High P.E. Instructional
Team Leader, Gay Petrlik
, who was inducted into the
Howard County Women's Athletic Hall of Fame on
Saturday, February 2, at Atholton High School. "P", as she
is affectionately called by her student-athletes, has
inspired many athletes and students at Hammond High
School. Even though Gay has retired her whistle, she can
still be seen encouraging the athletes by attending games,
celebrating their victories, and connecting with former

Congratulations to the Hammond Dance Company! The HHS Dance Company won the 2008 Professionalism and Performance Award at the Maryland State Dance Showcase on Friday, January 4. Over 200 dancers
were adjudicated and three Hammond dancers were selected as All-State Dancers: Maya Collins, Nakia Boomer, and Jennifer Allam. Receiving Honorable Mention
as All-State Dancers were Brittany Tyler and Chisa Coplin. The Dance Department thanks everyone for their support and encouragement of these young women.

ongratulations to Music students Grace
Owens and Rebecca Martin!
Grace, 9th
grade, auditioned on trombone and was
accepted to perform with the All-State
Junior Band. Rebecca, 10th grade,
auditioned on percussion and was
accepted as an alternate for the All-State
Senior Band.
Congratulations to Chorus student Taylor Washington! Taylor auditioned
and was accepted to perform with the Maryland Senior All-State
Chorus.
 
  The World Language department is "muy orgulloso"
(very proud) of its students who particpated in the
Poetry Alive Competition
at Mt. hebron High School on
Tuesday, November 6, 2007. World language students
from around the county recited or wrote original poems
in their respective language and level and presented
them in front of a very distinguished panel of judges. 68
students participated from Hammond, representing our
Spanish, Italian, and French classes. Hammond
 
dominated the competiton, bringing home eight county trophies, taking home the
crown in all Italian categories and advanced level Spanish. Read the full story

  With pride, the English department announces that
senior Matthew Winder is a recipient of one of the 2007 NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing. Each piece of writing submitted by a nominee was read and evaluated
by one high school judge and one college English teacher.
Nationwide there are 595 NCTE winners who are among
the best student writers in the country. Congratulations,
Matthew.
