class.

Congratulations to the Music Department for winning numerous awards during its trip to New York City in April, 2009, including the Fiesta-Val Grand Champion Trophy, won by the Symphonic Band and Orchestra for having the highest combined instrumental group scores. For a complete

  Congratulations to Ms. Amie Knox, who received the Harris Teeter "Together in Education" award. This
award is in recognition of Ms. Knox' commitment to the success of her students and her contribution to HaHS.


As recipient of the award, Ms. Knox was presented with
a check for $1000;
Harris Teeter also presented Hammond High School with a $1000 check.

Hammond student athlete Samuel Plazak was recently honored by
the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame. Last Month, their Greater Baltimore Chapter held an awards banquet honoring the region's top football scholar athletes.
 
   
Mr. Tim Cullen, former football head coach, Mr. Martin Vandenberge, Assistant Principal, Ms. Nicole Harryman, Assistant Principal, and Mr. Joseph Russo,
Athletic Director, attended the recent awards ceremony with Samuel Plazak.


Samuel Plazak is a three sport athlete
at Hammond where he also played
basketball and is a midfielder on the lacrosse team.
As Hammond's starting quarterback for the last three seasons, Samuel set seven school passing records and is also ranked in Hammond's all time top 10 in scoring and defensive interceptions. Academically, Samuel ranks in the top 10% of the class of 2009 and is a member of the National Honor Society, the Italian Honor Society, Class Council, and is on the Principal's Advisory Board.
The English Department congratulates the following students who are
contest winners:
Colleen George and Katie Guzman have won Honorable
Mention
in Literature in the Fred Benjamin Peace Contest for their essays.
Colleen and Katie will each receive a check and certificate at the Annual Peace Conference on Saturday, April 4.

The Maryland Center for the Book
will honor Rebecca Martin and Lavel Moorehead as finalists in the Letters About Literature, an essay contest which inspires young writers to write a letter to an author of a book that has changed their world view or themselves. Rebecca and Lavel will be honored at an Awards Ceremony at the City-Lit Festival on April 18.
 
  Congratulations to Nahshon Ford, winner of the WJZ
TV Black History Month Oratory Contest.
For 16 years,
WJZ, Channel 13 in Baltimore, has asked students to
choose a quote, write an original essay, and then perform
in front of an audience. At the Reginald Lewis Museum,
students from all over Maryland spoke about African-Americans who have made major contributions to society.
Nahshon spoke about President Barack Obama.
Competing against 20 semi-finalists, Nahshon took home
 
the prize package, which included a cash prize and a $1000.00 scholarship. To

  Congratulations to Mr. Ben Grabenstein, who was
voted as the 2009 Teacher of the Year for Hammond
High
by the Senior class. Mr. Grabenstein is in his ninth
year at Hammond, where he teaches Social Studies. He
has taught for 18 years in Howard County Schools.

These are some of the reasons why students selected Mr.
Grabenstein for this honor:
 
"His room is actually a place where I can have an intelligent conversation. I
           learn  something new in every class."
"He cares about his students, connects with them, and understands us like no
          other."
"He promotes independent thought, creativity and openness. He is incredibly
          knowledgeable and kind, and accepts others' ideas and thoughts."
"He is the funniest teacher at Hammond; he makes learning fun and interesting,
          and is really relaxed and easy to talk to."
"Because he is chill!"
 
 
  Leo Rogers (far left) has been selected to
compete in the Charm City Challenge on
April 5 at Towson University. Leo will join
the County All-stars, who will play the City
All-stars at 3:00 pm on April 5th. (Only one
other Howard County player will be
playing in this game.)

Chris Baker
will compete in the
 
McDonald's Round Ball Classic, which will be held on March 22. He will be
playing for the National All-stars in the premiere game. Chris was also selected to
compete in the Charm City Challenge on April 5 at Towson University. He will be
joining the Baltimore All-star Team. The Baltimore All-star team will compete
against the U.S. All-stars at 5:00 PM. Chris is the only area county player ever to
be selected to the Baltimore All-star team
. Most of the players selected for these
two teams are from prep schools and many of them have already committed to
high level Division I programs.

Congratulations Leo and Chris!
The Music Department would like to congratulate all of the students who participated in the Howard County Vocal Solo and Ensemble Festival on
January 31, 2009 and the Howard County Instrumental Solo and Ensemble
Festival on February 7, 2009. Our students received Superior or Excellent ratings. For a complete list of the results, go to the Music Department page.

Congratulations to Hammond senior Hannah Mollerick,
who received a Maryland All-State Award for her dance
technique and work ethic as observed during select master
classes at the Maryland Dance Showcase.

The Hammond Dance Company was selected and
performed in the Maryland State Dance Showcase at
Goucher College
on January 9. Hammond was one of
only three Howard County high schools to participate in the day long event of
master classes and performances.
  Congratulations to Mr. Eric Cullings, Technology
Education teacher at Hammond, who received the
Teaching Tools Award presented by the Central
Maryland Chapter of the Armed Forces
Communications and Electronics Association
. As
recipient, Mr. Cullings was honored at the AFCEA
luncheon on November 20, 2009 and received a $2500
check.
 
 
Congratulations to Music student David Kaiser-Jones! David, a junior,
auditioned on tuba and was selected as first alternate to the Maryland All-State Band.
 
The World Languages and ESOL departments would like to congratulate
all Hammond HS participants in Poetry Alive held on Tuesday, November
11, 2008 at River Hill High School.
Students performed poems in French,
German, Italian, and Spanish and ESOL students performed poems in English.
Hammond had the second highest number of participants, in both the Writing and
Recitation contests. All Hammond students who participated received medals for
being School Level winners. Hammond had many Countywide winners as well, who received medals and 1st place trophies.

  Esther Kwon and Nell Kropf won $100 in a contest for
designing the T-shirt
for the German-American Day
Field trip to McDaniel College on October 14, 2008. All
of the 900 + participants received a T-shirt to wear with
their design on it. Congratulations to Esther and Nell!!!
