RESEARCH DEP'T ALTERNATIVE LEARNING PROGRAM (ALP) |

Ms. April Lerner, Coordinator Independent Research/Mentor Program Intern/Mentor Overview Students design original research studies or creative productions intended to contribute new knowledge to the field of study. Students study off campus (five to ten hours per week) with a professional mentor in a self selected area of interest. The G/T resource teacher facilitates the experience and provides instruction in research methodologies, advanced writing skills, and oral presentation skills. At the mentors worksite, students apply their knowledge and skills. Applications are available from Ms. Askin. |

Independent Research Overview Students design original research studies or creative productions in self-selected areas of interest. Students learn advanced- level research methodologies and college- level writing and oral presentation skills. Under the guidance of the G/T resource teacher, each student identifies a problem and formulates a research question. Student researchers address identified problems, answer research questions, and communicate the results of their achievements to professionals in their selected areas of study. |

Alternative Learning Program Overview The purpose of the Alternative Learning Program is to provide students and staff with additional resources and supports that enable children displaying challenging behaviors to achieve success at Hammond High School. |

Ms. Peggy Coulson, ITL Biography Mrs. Coulson is a native Howard Countian. She is a graduate of Indiana University of Pa. and completed her graduate studies through Towson University and Loyola College. She has been a part Hammond High School since the 1979-80 school year. In addition to teaching ART, Mrs. Coulson has coached a variety of sports including field hockey, track, softball, and soccer. She was awarded the 1990 HCC award of Excellence in teaching, 2003 HHS teacher of the year, 2006 Howard County Career High school ART teacher. For the last 25 years, Mrs. Coulson has led her students in the restoration efforts of the Inner Harbor Carousel. Her students have designed and taught art lessons to residents of Morningside park and Bollman Bridge E.S. for Awesome Art Day. " I Thoroughly enjoy working with our HHS students, and helping them find success through the visual arts." |

Art Department Overview The art program is designed to develop creative problem solving and studio skills in the visual arts at the highest possible level. Objectives relating to aesthetics, history and culture, and criticism are sequenced with regard for developmentally appropriate behavioral characteristics of the studio learner.
